Question of the day, or more like a fun name game.

Earlier today I was just mindlessly scrolling through the Namenerds subreddit and found a fun game. I had actually a lot of laugh reading it. I was thinking for a long time that I’d like to do some name games on here like I used to for a while in the beginnings of this blog, since I’m into baby naming and all things names so much, but also wanted it to be light and not too demanding or full of rules, so that it would actually fit on a blog, and just couldn’t come up with any good idea. So thought I’d steal this one from Reddit, maybe you’ll like it:

What would you be named if your name had to be a combination of the names of your grandmothers/grandfathers (kind of like Renesmee from Twilight is a smoosh of Renee and Esmee)?

Me: My grandmothers are Helena and Stefania. I think Helenia sounds quite interesting. It does have a clear invented name feel but it’s not all that obnoxious. It flows really well. I love Helena and Helenia sounds even more dainty.

Stelena could be some trendy spin on Stella. I like Stella, and Stelena is not awful, but it does scream “I’M MADE UP!” Also I don’t really like when -ena names are pronounced -eena or -ayna (-ena with the short e is the only way to go in my opinion) and I think Stelena wouldn’t avoid the -eena pronunciation in English.

What else… oh, there are actually legit Polish names, or rather diminutives, Hania and Henia. Hania is from Hanna and Henia is from Henryka. But Hania is very popular for kids right now and it’s not really my cup of tea, whereas Henia is suuuuper elderly and not in a charming vintage name like Hattie has been in the US lately. 😀

Now that I think of it, I remember my Mum’s invention “Hestefa”. We call my grandmother Stefania Stefa for short most of the time. We were on a walk, I think I might have been about Sofi’s current age, and Mum was telling me something about my grandma. I asked “Which grandma?” to which she responded: “Hestefa”. We both laughed at that, and then I thought that it sounds like some German aristocrat, especially coupled withh our very German-sounding last name. Her Excellency Countess Hestefa von Z… 😀 Obviously I had to share that with Mum, and then we kept laughing at that all the way back.

Oh wait, Hestia! LOL. That’s interesting! I don’t love the name very much but I like the goddess Hestia and I vaguely remember that years ago, back when I used to do more social media, there was a sort of personality test going among my Twitter friends which told you what your goddess archetype was, and mine was Hestia according to it. Hestia is cool. I guess I could live with that.

But, as I keep thinking of it, I’ve convinced myself that Helenia rocks!

I guess most of my readers already know that I’m blind, so I felt a little hesitant about the picture part. I mean I could do it but I’d need a lot of help with it, someone would have to take them for me so I was inclined to just list my favourite things and don’t bother with the photos. But actually I know it would be much more fun for you if there were some pictures and my Mum was able to help me out, and I always wanted to someday make my blog at least a little bit more attractive by adding at least a few pictures, so why not now haha. I just hope I won’t screw up anything while editing them so please if something looks wrong or not quite as it should let me know. 😀

My “Purr” T-shirt. I got one T-shirt from my sis for Christmas as you might recall and then another one last month. It’s red, which I don’t like, but other than that I love it so much that I can even tolerate the colour.

Braille-Sense Plus. My mate of 11 years that I owe a lot to but will be happy to replace with a new one as soon as possible, he’s getting a bit too senile. It has a Braille display so I can read books or anything else on it on my own, which I prefer to speech synthesis, write, use the Internet to some extend, use as a Braille display for the computer, etc.

Sleepy…

Hhrrru?

It’s Misha. Sorry I haven’t posted anything last week. I was too hot and Mila wasn’t particularly in the mood so we just gave it up. I hope no one missed me too much. Just a little bit.

We’ve been having a lot of sunshine lately and it’s hot all the time. Today not so much, and my human Dad says there may be a storm soon, but we’ve had a few storms already and it’s still the same, only more humid. Peeps are getting a bit sick of it, but for me it’s OK, it just makes me so very slow and sluggish and sleepy. But I like being sleepy. I can have lots of nice dreams then.

Though I would be happier if the peeps would let me out for a little while. But nooo they’re so stupid and boring and stubborn and don’t understand me!!! They only let me sometimes sit at the window and then they watch me carefully as if they thought I’m gonna fly away in a second. Horrible peeps.

Today they let me sit at the window for a while. Mum was washing Mila’s window and I was sitting and looking at her and at the world. I like to look at the nature or what’s going on outside the house but I also like to watch what peeps are doing here, if they’re doing a lot, like cleaning for example. I love observing them. Particularly if they don’t see me. And then Mum wanted to put the mosquito net at Mila’s window, and I was watching the procedure carefully, but it didn’t last long because it turned out that the net is too short so they have to buy a new one. The one thing they don’t know is that there is much easier solution, much cheaper and right in front of their noses. It’s ME!

They could just let me sit in the window and I would be happy to catch and eat all the insects that would fly in. Or I would just scare them so that they would fly out, I can be very scary when I want to. And then I would fly out with them for a while. But I would come back soon, don’t worry, I’m not that awful. I would just go for a little trip with them insects from time to time. That would be lovely.

But they never, ever take me seriously. :/

Zofijka is away for a few days. She was gone on Wednesday and she still hasn’t come. But I don’t miss her too much. She’d want me to play with her or lie together with her constantly and for me it’s way too exhausting right now. I didn’t even notice when she was gone, I realised it the next day when I woke up after a long long sleep.

OK, back to sleep now. I’m terribly tired.

Question of the day.

Do you use any e-reader? If so, what was the last physical book you read?

My answer:

Of course, I do use e-readers. On a daily basis, I use my PlexTalk, also, because I like to read on my own, in Braille, I often read books on my Braille-Sense, which is a Braille notetaker with a Braille display, and among other things you can use it as a reading device. I feel like I absorb and learn more if I can read something by myself, rather than listen to it, so if I have the choice, I use my BrailleSense, though PlexTalk is much more comfortable option like in bed or while travelling or something. My Braille-Sense is quite portable but because it’s now over 10 years old, the battery is pretty much screwed up and I can’t get a new one at the moment so I have to have it on the charger actually all the time nowadays. But when I read books in other languages, if they’re not audiobooks, I almost always do it by myself. Also sometimes I happen to read books on my laptop but it’s rather rarely nowadays.

The last physical book, hm, as much as I love physical books in theory, it’s rather tough in practice to read physical books in Braille regularly. They’re way larger than normal, way more expensive, and generally not the most handy on the Earth. They’re very limited, you can’t get just whatever you want in Braille, I mean sure, you can order it in some printing house or something, I was once forced to do so, or my Mum was, and the costs were a pure nightmare. So if you were blind and wanted to only read physical books, I guess you wouldn’t read a lot since in most cases you should be rather prepared that the book you are looking for isn’t available anywhere. I theoretically am subscribed to our Polish sort of main Braille library, but since there are so many comfier, cheaper and useful alternatives I don’t see much of a point in doing so, unless I really wouldn’t have any way of reading anything on my own, then I would probably read at least some physical Braille books just to not become a secondary illiterate, as it’s not quite a tempting perspective for me. In the past, when I didn’t have as many reading devices, it was a regular thing in our family life that we were getting HUGE bags with books in mail from that library, there was always a lot of hassle around it, they were heavy, my Mum had to go back and forth to the post office quite often, often even was shipping the books forward to my school so that I could read them as I wasn’t at home most of the time, but I’ve always been a bookworm so there was no other way. 😀

What I borrowed from the Braille library for the last time, were tables with mathematic formulas that I needed to prepare to my finals, and, quite obviously, if you know me well enough, I’ve never thought about reading it whole like a book, there are so many more interesting and important things to do in life, right? 😀 I just got what I needed from it and that was all. So, hm, do I actually remember what was the last physical, actual book I’ve read? I guess nope. Had to be like four years ago, if not more, because even already in my last years at the school for the blind I was reading very few physical books other than textbooks or compulsory readings or such. Wow, I didn’t even realise it before. 😀

And the actual question for today is also related to books:

Do you think you would be happy working in a bookshop, or being a librarian?

My answer:

Hm, I certainly do like reading, even if I am picky with books in a sense, and I guess it could be a nice job, although nothing I’ve ever dreamt about. Other than that, it’s a bit hard for me to imagine myself working in a bookshop or library because I am blind, unless it would be really adjusted, or I’d work in a library for the blind, the latter would be doable theoretically, i guess. But, usually, libraries for the blind are a part of schools for the blind, at least here, apart from one main library, and schools for the blind is definitely not an environment I would like to have close connections with them, I already puke with them all. So no, I think it’s not the best option for me. Or even if I’d have quite good conditions at such a work place and would like it, I don’t think I would be so professionally fulfilled that we could talk about happiness in this case.

What was the last thing you doodled on a piece of paper?

My answer:

Doodling sounds like a fab activity, but since I am blind, in my case it’s rather pointless and not the easiest thing to do, I guess. So I don’t thik I’ve ever doodled anything in my entire life. 😀

What is the most interesting thing you’ve read or seen, this week?

My answer:

I watched one of my favourite Polish Youtube channels recently, it is about Polish language, you know, all that stuff how to speak properly, like common mistakes people make, about etymology, and words, etc. lots of interesting stuff. and I watched a very interesting video about origin of some words, and their alternate, archaic meanings.

Did you have coffee or tea, this morning? If so, how did you take it?

My answer:

I often have both, coffee before breakfast and then tea with breakfast, but today I just had tea. Raspberry tea. It’s my favourite one right now. Mum bought lump sugar recently, we don’t usually use it but she just said it’s more fun haha, so we’re now using it, so I’ve had raspberry tea with two sugars.

Do you know any random factoids that other people may not know?

My answer:

I’d think so. Anyone knows that names Alice and Heidi are a form of the same name, Adelheidis? 😉

Of other things, more associated with the term “random factoids”, I have a book with some and one of the sad things I learned from it is that apparently our brains have gotten smaller since the stone age. Or actually maybe that’s not sad. Maybe stone age people had macrocephaly? What do you think?

Question of the day.

What is the last thing you cried about?

My answer:

Cried like cried or just felt like crying? I have issues with crying and with expressing emotions generally, so, although I’ve learned to cry, it’s still really hard to do for me and I am rarely able to really let my emotions out through crying. I can feel like crying, or like I would really really like to cry very often, but I don’t cry often at all. I guess the last time I cried was in May, after one of my finals, and then I literally cried all the way back home and even afterwards and couldn’t stop, it was all scary! But the last time I felt like crying was last week on Tuesday, and it was also in some part related to my finals. But generally I felt like crying because I was just overwhelmed by lots of emotions and triggered, but just couldn’t let it out in any way, or figure out what’s actually ging on inn my brain, I was also extremely angry at that time and when I feel angry I often feel on the verge of tears, just like my Mum. In most situations I am glad I am not an easy cryer, like many women in my family are, but sometimes I would really like to be able to relieve myself through tears but it just seems impossible nowadays after all those years of bottling things up.

My answer:

The last thing I texted was last Saturday (now you get the idea how often I text with anyone 😀 ) and it was to Zofijka: “Sofi if you want to talk to Mum call me her phone is dead”. And that’s about it.

What was the last thing you said out loud (add context if you’d like)?

My answer:

Well, I’m home alone for almost all day today because as I wrote a few days ago my parents went to Szczecin for a few days, Zofijka is at grandparents’, and Olek is at work, so I only talk to Misha. And the last thing I said out loud was “Misha!”.

Thought we’d do some “lasts” questions again for a while, I’ve been recently focused on a lot of things, but not questions topics, and that’s pretty easy and uncomplicated, and there was a thread with them on BTN recently, so: What was the last thing you ate?
My answer:
A bread roll with a creamy cheese and some chilli flavoured kabanosy. DO you know what kabanosy are? As far as I know it’s only a Polish thing, though I may be wrong. A kabanos is a thin, usually dry sausage with a smoky flavour. I am not big on meat in general, but kabanosy are one of the types of meat I do like. They can really vary but the ones we eat most often are small, they are a perfect thing to take with yourself if you go on a trip, or picnic, or any sort of long travel, that’s what we usually take when going somewhere further, along with sandwiches, and I’ve heard many little kids really like them in particular, well maybe not chilli ones, but other small-sized. And as I said the ones we usually buy are chilli flavoured. In my opinion, the dryer, the better, well as far as you can actually eat it obviously. I’ve also had some cherry tomatoes from my Dad’s garden, they were scrummy. 🙂 How about you? 🙂

How is the weather?
My answer:
It’s about 15 C., rather cloudy and windy, recently we have a lot of warm days, and it still feels warm, but it’s cooler than even yesterday, and it’s definitely not hot. How is it where you are? 🙂
