What phrase do you absolutely hate?
My answer:
There are surely ones that I hate more than this one, but what came to my mind first is a sort of weird saying that we have in Polish that I have no clue why people use it, and more importantly, what sort of response or reaction do they expect to it. š I’ve no idea if there’s an English equivalent, but I hope there’s none. It basically says that it’s only the guilty one or the culprit who explains himself. It’s not only freakishly nonsensical and annoying, but also potentially super harmful when used in more serious situations. Thankfully, it’s mostly used in very casual situations and is supposed to be like a joke or something playful, kinda teasing, but still, it can sometimes create a rather puzzling situation sometimes where the person at the receiving end is basically stuck. If you make up weird sayings, at least go an extra mile and make up some clear script that the other person could follow. Good thing that the law doesn’t work this way. š If someone accuses you of something and you don’t defend yourself, they’ll say that you’re probably guilty after all if you don’t even have a good excuse. If you do explain yourself, they’ll say that only guilty people do it. So, I seriously wonder, what a non-guilty person is supposed to do in the situation? I see though that more and more people are realising how stupid this is so maybe it’ll die out at some point.
What’s your phrase? š
Hmm… I hate-hate-hate the term “rule of thumb” because its origins involve how thick the stick could be that a man was allowed to beat his wife with. So I NEVER say “rule of thumb” because it upsets me! š®
I also hate “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps,” because it was said to me once and it seems to be dripping with condescension and judgment.
Hmm… Oh, the same person told me that some weaklings pop antidepressants like candy. Can’t say that I care for that turn of phrase either! š®
If I think of any others, I’ll report back! Fun!!
And you’re right! š People who don’t testify seem guilty. But people who do testify also seem guilty!! AAUGH! A convicted person can’t win! š

Wow, that’s interesting and horrid about rule of thumb! I’ve never liked the other two either.

I don’t like the phrase bleeding heart liberal. Why should it be a bad thing to care about disadvantaged people?

“love is cruel” .. wtf?
The game can be cruel, the axe can be cruel or/and crude, the death could be cruel or the judgement could be so… but why the f… love should be that way?
A part of me would say that I approve this phrase.. but its just my subconscious mind, my jelaousy and my comparison. I approve this question, it was a good one. š

Yep, to me it sounds like an oxymoron. If it’s cruel, it’s not love.
