Question of the day.

What would you wish for if there was a genie who would grant your one wish?

My answer:

I would want to speak all “my” languages fluently, as fluently as possible, without having to learn them, especially the basic stuff when you hardly know anything at all in a language yet and you have to learn absolutely everything. A lot of people think that if I keep learning and learning and learning languages I must really like it, as in, the process of learning. But in fact I don’t. I think actually using a language is way more interesting, so if I could just acquire a language on the same or higher level of fluency that I’d be able to achieve via learning consciously, I’d take it, so I could use more time on actually using and sort of consuming the language rather than learning it. I mean, I’d probably still have to learn some things, even natives do, but this kind of learning doesn’t really feel like learning and is far more interesting when you already have a firm grasp of a language. Also learning of some of “my” languages, the less commonly spoken ones, is a pain with the whole practical side of learning, like how you’re supposed to do it, where you get the resources from, where do you practice and with whom, especially if you don’t live in the area where the language is spoken and even more especially if you’re blind so accessibility of things can be limited or there can be other obstacles on the way like lack of speech synths for a specific language or having to learn a Braille alphabet of every single language if you want to read Braille in them like I do. So that would be just extremely cool!

  1. Ohhh, that would be great if you could become even more multilingual just like that!! ๐Ÿ˜ฎ I’m still forever impressed by your grasp of my language as a non-native! It’s mindblowing!

Hmm… what would I wish for… ohhh!! I’d wish to meet my soulmate, who should have a million dollars in his pockets for me! HA HA! That would rock!! I love genies!!

  2. Oh, that’s so interesting that you don’t really like the process of learning languages. Neither do I, which is the reason I don’t speak any language other than Dutch and English. I mean, the language-learning stage before I can actually use a language in conversation, completely bores me out of my mind.

As for what I’d ask from a genie, I’d probably ask for my husband to be given a house and job close by my care facility, so that I don’t need to worry about the distance anymore.

    1. Yep, it’s boring. But my love for “my” languages is so consuming that I have no choice and I guess the fact that I’m highly motivated to keep going is what keeps me going, because if I’m unable to learn my languages it frustrates me endlessly.
I’m sure it would be way easier for both of you if your wish could be granted.

  3. That is a hard one because guilty me knows I should wish for something unselfish and to even begin to imagine if I could choose something only for myself blows my mind. But I think if I were to try to marry the two together, I would wish for everyone’s life to be such that there is no sadness or drama. The benefit to me is I don’t feel the need to “fix” it or have great anxiety worrying over all the things I can’t do to help.

    1. Currently, I can speak Polish which is my native language, and am at varying stages of learning English, Swedish, Welsh and Norwegian, but I plan to learn quite a few more languages in the future.
I think it wouldn’t necessarily have to be so that all wishes came with a price, but it’s true that it’s better to be very careful and think twice about what one wishes for because it would definitely be easy to put oneself in a yucky situation if one doesn’t think of all the possible effects of one’s wishes.
