How old were you when you learned to read? Did you learn by sight memorisation, or sounding out letters?
My answer:
I wrote a post answering a similar question before, so I won’t write a lot in detail here. If I remember correctly, I was about 7-8 when I learned to read and it was through memorisation.
How was it with you? 🙂
I think I started reading when I was 4. I know in school we were taught to sound out letters, and that’s probably how my mom taught me as well.

It’s cool that you got to learn it so early on! 🙂

My mom read to me a lot. She read to my brother too, but II think he was less interested, so it took him longer to pick up.

My parents started teaching me with Highlights magazine when I was three!! They did all the sounding-out exercises with me, and they read to me all the time!! Also, I learned about vowels in preschool (I actually remember that!).

Four or five and I think I learned by sight memorization.

I was possibly about four. I taught myself primarily, through trying to ‘read’ the comics in the newspaper, so perhaps it was sight learning (visual) leading to associating the words with the pictures, and then building on the concept. My mother was big on reading to us too and teaching us words very early on.

I think the earlier the better. 🙂 And that sounds like a fun way to learn to read.

I really can’t remember how old I was. I am guessing 4-5. My mom, although very educated and spoke very good English, was not a native English speaker. I am not sure, nor do I recall, her teaching me to read.

I learned it relatively late, at least compared with sighted kids, but don’t remember the process of learning itself very clearly either.
