If you could gain perfect fluency in any language instantly, but only one language, which would you choose?
My answer:
Oh my, this one’s so hard! I’d like to be perfectly fluent in ALL my languages, as quickly as only possible. But… one language… I think I’m going to go with the most difficult one out of the ones I want to learn, which I guess would be Sami, especially considering the small amount of speakers and even smaller of resources. If I could be fluent in any of the Sami languages (preferably LuleΓ₯ Sami but any will do) that would be very helpful.
You? π
I’m not sure. Mandarin would probably be the most useful, since there’s a large Mandarin-speaking population in my area, but I don’t like the sound of it at all.

Sounds like a very practical choice to me.

I’d probably choose Spanish as over here it’s the most useful one. So many speak Spanish and it’s actually becoming a requirement for certain jobs to be fluent in Spanish. BUT. If I was picking a language ‘for fun’ and because I would really love to to speak it, I’d choose Navajo.

I’m sure Spanish must be incredibly useful in the US. And probably around the world really. Navajo is an interesting choice!

I’d choose Czech. I have a semifantasy of living in Prague one day, and they literally require you to learn the language. (Besides which, how would I get by without it?) I keep meaning to find a free online practice app with audio, but I keep putting it off!!
My second choice would be American Sign Language, since I’m hard of hearing–but no one else in my life speaks it… but I could teach my dad, and then he and I could talk that way! He’s deafer than I am. What fun!!

Wow, I didn’t know it’s required in Czech to speak the language if you want to live there! Have you checked out Duolingo? Maybe it could be helpful for you. I am not a particular fan of the app but most people who do language learning seem to enjoy it a lot.
What a fun idea with you and your dad communicating in ASL! π I think it could make a great secret language if no one else uses it in your life.

Norwegian since it’ll be critical for my new life after I join my fiance. If I could pick 2 lanuages though, I would also want to be fluent in Mandarin as it’s my mother tongue but I’m not fluent.

I would like to be fluent in Japanese.
What with little bears and peaches and tea and bamboo.

My Sofi would also like to speak Japanese, as she’s been very fascinated in J-pop. π

My favourite J-pop band would probably be Morning Musume.
