Question of the day.

Hi people! ๐Ÿ™‚

Are there any food combinations you hate?

My answer:

I think quite a few, but what comes to my mind right now is that I hate the combination of spicy with sweet. I love love love spicy food, spicy condiments etc. and I love a lot of sweet things as well, but together they taste gross. I hate things like chocolate with chilli, or sauces that are kind of both sweet and a little spicy, or some crisps are like that too, spicy with a bit of sweet-ish flavour, it’s yucky. If something is spicy, then I want it to be really spicy, and not something in-between. Similarly, there are probably even more things that are both spicy and sour/vinegary, especially crisps or sauces/ketchups. I really like things that are really really spicy, and when for example I want to buy a hot sauce for something, I know a couple that I know are really good, but when I buy something new that I haven’t tested before, chances are quite high that, instead of being spicy it’ll only be spicy-sour or spicy-sweet. My Mum dislikes spicy-vinegary things as well, generally some people say though that I’m weird, because lots of things aren’t spicy enough for me, even if they don’t contain any taste combinations like that, haha, so perhaps indeed my perception is different or something.

  1. Hmmm….. well, I like eating corn (on the cob or off the cob), but I don’t like corn in my tex-mex soup. The recipe calls for corn, and I just leave it out. I’m not sure why it bothers me, though! Too corny? ๐Ÿ˜€

Some foods are gross to me, and I’ll only eat them baked into something. Butter and milk come to mind. If baked into a loaf of bread, that’s fine. But putting butter on food, or drinking straight milk, is not going to happen.

I’ve never liked peanut butter and jelly. I have no issue with either food separately. I’ll eat peanut butter on bread or crackers, etc., and I’ll eat jelly on an English muffin. Together? Never. No clue why. I don’t think it was ever offered to me as a kid, so it just never developed an appeal!

I can eat cheese if it’s counterbalanced by tomato sauce. Pizza is fine, spaghetti with parmesan is fine, etc. Once you remove the tomato, I can’t eat cheese. My dad explained that the tomato somehow alters the taste of cheese. Just… yuck. Another exception is pretzel-and-cheese Combos crackers. I like those!

      1. In America the PB & J sandwich is a thing we all grow up with. I enjoy peanut butter and jelly (especially the real fruit apricot jam that Smuckers ™ offers. The bread has to be fresh though. Stale bread? Yuckkos. PB & J is a good combination, but I realize not to everyone’s taste. And there’s the whole salty/sweet business which might bother you.

    1. Oh, I see! All those different foods in different countries are absolutely fascinating. I imagine PB & J must be one of those things you either love or hate.
Yeah, salty and sweet is not my thing either, I had salted caramel in Sweden and that was certainly very interesting, but not something that I would overly enjoy.

  2. Food combos I dislike intensely (hate is too strong a word because I’m a food-o-holic and ((mostly)) all food is great. Anyway. My most disliked food (in combination with anything) is onions. BLEAH. Onions are gross IMHO and I never eat them. If they come on something (a pizza someone else ordered and shared for instance) I furtively pick them all off. They make me gag. I have a secret theory that I might be mildly allergic to them or something, but lordie. No onions please. On/in anything.

    1. I think it would make sense that you could be allergic to them if you dislike them so much, I know quite a few people who had strong aversions to some foods and later discovered that they’re just allergic to them. I do like onions, but the smell is so impressive that I can easily understand why so many people don’t. ๐Ÿ˜€

  3. This chicken and waffle madness that’s been going on makes me wretch just thinking about it. Maple syrup with chicken? Ugh, gross.

    1. I don’t get that combo either. Who thought that up?? Maple syrup (to me) is pretty disgusting, so why would I mess up perfectly good chicken by dumping syrup on it? Waffles are for brekkie, chicken for lunch or dinner (supper). No combo necessary!

      1. I guess it’s some common thing in the United States’ south, but the combo makes me gag a little. I don’t even like maple flavoring on my bacon, which is extreme because I loooove pretty much all bacon.

  4. Oh, I love spicy foods too!

As for your question, I generally hate mashy textures. Here, a lot of vegetables can be created ร  la crรจme, which means they add some cream to it. While I love those veggies and do like creamy on occasion, I really hate this. Yuck!

    1. I hate hate mashy stuff! I don’t mind creamy, smooth textures, but mashy are really a nightmare. I too like most vegetables and cream can be gorgeous with the right foods, but together the mix is awful.
